Distilled from 100% malted barley, The whisky had spent at least 14 years in traditional oak barrels before finishing in the rum casks.
Wine Enthusiast 92 points - After regular maturation, this Scotch is “extra matured” in former rum casks. The end result layers rich, mouth-coating dried apricot, honey and Sherry notes on top of Balvenie’s usual caramel and light peat profile. It finishes flavorful, though with a distinct burst of alcohol warmth.
Ultimate Beverage Challenge 96 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2011 Finalist. Concentrated aromas of sawdust/wood plank and brown sugar are prevalent; toasty, rum-like, molasses tastes match up well with sweet bouquet.
It is a great Scotch, especially for the price point, and a great Scotch for people just getting their palates acquainted with Scotch. It is aged for about ten years in bourbon casks, and finished for two years in sherry casks.
